The guiding principle for the design of the campus was ‘living through learning’ i.e. living on the campus as part of the school community should form the core of the learning experience. The master plan establishes the cultural proposition of the school as a globally significant institution while being grounded to the specific context of the site. The intrinsic openness of the plan engages the wider local community, designed to reach beyond the static objects, buildings and carve a holistic landscape that is self defining and permeable. The high degree of informal spaces on campus allow for outreach and interaction. The architectural expression is inspired from nature - creating a unique, seamless, organic and free flowing form which is juxtaposed with more straight lines of the housing , landscaping , being the unifying element between the familiar and the unexplored. Another design determinant was the knowledge and workmanship of sustainable alternative techniques like ferrocement and stabilized rammed earth practiced in the nearby region of Auroville.

This competition confronted us with the fundamental question of the culture of education. Spatially this raised questions about the proximity between live and study space, proximity between teachers’ and students’ spaces. We chose to segregate and provide an open space as a controlled interaction zone, not unlike the courtyards of Nalanda University proposal. Instead of typical corridor circulation spaces, atriums were proposed based on pedagogy of learning while doing

The master plan represents a return to the elements - earth, water, wind, especially celebrating the proximity to the sea and the open horizon that beckons to create a setting that ignites and nurtures the quest for knowledge
