OBEROI RESIDENCE
Designing a home for a close-knit family, with a wide age difference and diverse interests, we needed a unifying element that held the spaces together while giving the members privacy. We felt the key was a courtyard - the contained yet open space, typical of traditional homes across India, which is of much significance culturally as well as climatically.
The layout was structured around the semi-covered courtyard with the ground floor housing the more communal spaces and the grandmothers living quarters. The upper floors looked into the area. Residences in Delhi can often be obsessed with outward appearances. To our relief, the Oberoi’s were more concerned with user comfort and wanted an elegant understated quality of spaces.
This was a time when imported building materials were increasingly becoming fashionable. However, we gravitated towards the use of local materials, especially stone. Through our design we attempted to celebrate the material and showcase its suitability in the context of Indian homes, how the color palette of Indian stones worked best for Indian homes.
