Sri Aurobindo Society, headquartered in Pondicherry promotes and cultivates social, personal and spiritual development. They sought to create a hub for learning and culture on a site renowned for its location, greenery, and the energy it exudes; well positioned to nurture the many activities that the society conducts and supports. Being in Delhi, the capital city, the campus was envisioned to be a gateway to an audience beyond India, thus calling for a memorable architectural and spatial programming which would take into consideration the operation as well as the unique culture of the society.

The site plan is constrained by the availability of only one entry/ exit point to the site. The site is bound on all sides opening on to a busy traffic junction.  The master plan was evolved through a highly participatory process. All aspects of the design- phasing, program, massing- are based on various stakeholders’ ideas of the future vision for the campus.

The master planning exercise focuses on mapping transitions, creating edges that do not divide space into closed-up zones but instead enables gracious transitions between competing functions. For instance, adjacent spaces are occupied by the shrine that is inward and protective, utilized by senior citizens that participate in meditation, young people from creative disciplines, and boisterous preschoolers. The master plan was evolved through a highly participatory process, and is to be built in stages.
