The Giri Sports Complex is a part of the Haryana Agricultural University located in Hisar. It is one of prime facilities of its time, instrumental in nurturing and developing sports talent in the state. We were contacted by Jindal South West group to renovate the facility and enhance the sports infrastructure to carry through the sporting legacy of the state. What makes this structure even more special is that it is designed by one of India’s first woman architects, Urmila Eulie Chowdhury, now forgotten in the sands of time.
Our scope of work was Structural Repairs, Architectural Renovation and Interior Design, Renewal of Services. The massive boxing arena, with a gorgeous folded plate concrete shell roof is a masterpiece of post-colonial architecture in India. After adding the required boxing rings, the leftover floor space is utilized by adding physiotherapy rooms and offices.
The local legacy and global ambitions are highlighted by bold graphic interventions on an existing minimal modernist palette. Clean, large signage in a signature style provide coherent navigation across the sports campus. Artwork in the form of Mural and typography create a high impact and cost-effective identity for the space. The original material palette of Brick and concrete was restored along with the introduction of bold colours and metallic accents into the mix.
